The islands within the Quarner region
The islands of the Kvarner Bay are numerous and varied, rich in historical and cultural content and offering enchanting landscapes to the viewer's eyes. The island of Krk (Krk) is among the closest to Rijeka.
Considered the cradle of Croatian culture, cultural amenities includes prehistoric and Roman sites. The major cities are: Krk, Vrbnik, Baška, Omišalj and Dobrinj, medieval villages of disarming beauty.
Punat, another small town on the island, is located hosts one of the largest marinas on the Adriatic sea. In front of Punat lies a small island called Košljun, famous for its Franciscan monastery.
From Krk you can easily reach the islands of Cres and Rab, the last one connected by ferry to a smaller island called Lošinj. These islands, together with Unije, peculiar for its olive trees present on the island since the Roman era, come together to form a unique archipelago.
Cres is known for the Griffon Vulture, bird of prey, residing on the island, in danger of extinction. Rab, hometown of San Marino, hosts one of the finest Romanesque cathedrals in the region and numerous monasteries.
Kvarner's region mountains
Taking the ancient road "Lujzijana" connecting Rijeka to the capital, you reach Gorski Kotar - the mountainous heart of the Kvarner region.
Gorski Kotar is known for the national park Risnjak and the homonymous peak, as well as the spring of the river Kupa. Here you can observe the flora and fauna of the region by joining organised trips that take you through Gorski Kotar.
Proceeding along the Lujzijana you get to Lokve and the shores of Lake Youth where there is also a karst cave called Lokvarka. Further along the way, you can reach Delnice, Crni Lug and the valley of the Kupa, or Skrad or Mrkopalj. The Gorski Kotar region is bursts with history and culture and it has been known since the Roman times with the name - Castra Alpium iuliarium.
This area is populated by numerous castles, including Brod na Kupi, Severin na Kupi, Stara Sušica and Čabar.
